Our house is located in postcard-perfect Somesville, the first village on Mount Desert Island, founded in 1761. Once a bustling village of mills, merchants, and shipbuilders, today it is home to an active repertory theatre, an antique shop, and many residents who cherish it for its history and prototypical New England charm. A highlight for us every year is our library’s blueberry and book fair on the lawns overlooking the harbor.

Built in 1880 and noted for having had Teddy Roosevelt as a house guest, our Main Street home is also very conveniently located. It provides easy access to all of Acadia National Park’s trails and carriage roads and both Bar Harbor and "The Quiet Side". It’s just a few minutes to walk to the library, a stop for the free Island Explorer bus service, and a convenience store that sells The New York Times and makes the best cinnamon buns.

Renovated and updated, the house is comfortable and, according to friends, beautifully decorated. You can take our kayak -- or your own boat -- across the street and down to the village landing to explore Somes Harbor. Then relax in our wicker-filled sun room overlooking a private pond and spruce grove. The house is perfect not only for families, but also for two couples because of the two equally sized bedrooms and two large baths. However, we don’t recommend it for young children because of the pond in the backyard and two very steep staircases.

Second floor Master suite with king bed, ceiling fan, full bath with shower only and dressing room/office. Bedroom with a queen bed. Bedroom with 2 twin beds. Large full bath with shower and tub.

• Somes Harbor across the street and maybe 100 feet north -- a dock, crystal clear water (our neighbor from Finland swims here), benches, and gret views for morning coffee.
• Somesville Bridge - one of the most-photographed in all of Maine.
• Mount Desert Island Historical Society - The Somesville Museum has displays of folk life dating back to the first island settlers.
• Acadia Repertory Theatre - In a quaint performance space seating 148, audiences have enjoyed drama, comedy, mystery, and children's theatre since 1973.
